The club are prepared to pay £17m for him and he will partner Jan Vertonghen, while Younes Kaboul will leave for Lazio. Manager Mauricio Pochettino has clearly targeted strengthening the back and Musacchio will be the third defender to arrive at the club following Ben Davies and Eric Dier’s transfer.Did you know?1) Born in Rosario, the same Argentinean city to produce Lionel Messi, Angel di Maria and Ezequiel Lavezzi, Musacchio joined River Plate’s youth academy at the age of nine. In the club’s 2006/07 season, he made his first team debut against Velez, becoming their youngest ever debutant at the age of 16 years, three months and 14 days old.2) Musacchio became a champion at River Plate before Villarreal snapped him up in August 2009, initially making him a part of their B team in the Spanish second division. After 17 games with the reserves, he was rewarded with his first team debut in February 2010 against Athletic Bilbao. He impressed enough to appear in Villarreal’s next three first team squads, playing on two occasions.3) In the 2010/11 season Musacchio was promoted permanently to Villarreal’s first team, and played 31 games in all competitions for them that year. His displays earned him a place in UEFA’s La Liga breakthrough team of 2010/11, alongside the likes of Ivan Rakitic, Antoine Griezmann, and Iker Muniain.4) As well as playing in his natural centre-back position, Musacchio can operate at right-back and defensive midfield. Last season he played 32 times in the heart of the Villarreal defence, making an average 2.4 tackles and showing his impressive reading of the game with 3.4 interceptions, while he is also admired in Spain for his pace and aerial ability.5) Musacchio has dual Italian and Argentinean nationality, but has always opted to play for the country of his birth. He was an U17 and U20 international with Argentina, and made his senior Argentina debut against Nigeria in June 2011. His performances in La Liga last season had many of his supporters calling out for their defender to be included in Argentina’s World Cup squad. His only goal of the campaign came in a 2-1 loss to Barcelona where his display saw his name linked with a move to the Catalans. What is being said?He says:“The quality and level of [Musacchio] will make it difficult to find a replacement.”– Villarreal manager MarcelinoVideo evidence(All stats correct as of 05/08/14)Is Musacchio the man to form a rock solid partnership with Vertonghen in the heart of the Tottenham defence?
