FRISCO, Texas – The 2018 Southland Conference Women’s Golf Championship tees off Monday at Woodforest Golf Club in Montgomery, Texas. This is 17th edition of the championship and the second consecutive tournament at the 6,191 yard, par 71 course. Houston Baptist and Sam Houston State will start its opening rounds at 9:30 a.m. as the No. 3 and No. 4 conference teams, respectively. The Huskies won their first conference championship a year ago with Lexi Brooks carding a 210 total score to break a seven-year record for lowest 54-hole score, set by UCA’s Rebecca Sorensen. The team also scored the lowest team total at a Southland Championship with an 881 score in 2017. HBU’s junior Kaity Cummings leads HBU. In the team’s last three tournaments, Cummings finished no less than 12th in the individual leaderboards, winning the Bradley-Brookhaven Invitational on March 13. Woodforest Golf Club has also served home to a handful of Texas Golf Association tournaments and qualifiers, including the State Amateur Qualifier, Mid-Am Qualifier, State Senior 4-Ball Championship and the TGA Legends Junior Tour tournaments. The Bearkats last finished first at their host tournament on Oct. 2-3, 2017, but have not won as a team since. Alberto has three individual wins on the season, last finishing first at the HBU Husky Invitational.
