Police officer suffers injuries after man rams bike into him

first_imgKolkata: A traffic police constable was seriously injured while intercepting an errant biker riding without a helmet. The policeman identified as Tapan Oraon has been admitted to a city hospital.According to sources, the incident took place on Monday night, during naka -checking on Syed Amir Ali Avenue opposite a shopping mall. Apart from traffic police personnel of East traffic guard, policemen from Karaya police station were also there. Around 11 pm, police saw a biker was riding without helmet. When a police personnel ordered him to stop, the errant bike rider tried to flee by increasing speed. While doing so an elderly pedestrian fell in front of the bike. But the biker hit him and tried to give a slip to the police. He somehow managed to get a hold of the bike’s grab rail. Seeing Oraon is about to detain him the errant biker increased the speed all of a sudden and Oraon lost balance and fell on the road. As he was still holding on to the grab rail, Oraon was dragged about almost 100 meters. When he suffered serious injuries he lost his grip and the errant biker fled the spot. Question arises when Oraon was trying to stop the bike, why other policemen did not come to assist him or tried to stop the bike rider. Later, police tried to identify the bike’s registration number but failed as the CCTV camera footage was not clear. Since the past few weeks, Kolkata Police have been on nakachecking duty across the city to check traffic violators and curb the menace of errant bikers. While doing so, more than 1,000 have been prosecuted every night. Also, several car drivers and bikers were arrested for drunk driving and other major offences.last_img read more
